Following the death of Rainulf I, Rainulf II and his brothers were deprived of their father's honors and placed at the
Court of Louis. With the deposing of Emporor Charles the Fat in 888, Robertin (Count Eudes) became King of the West Franks
and named Raiunulf II to be Duke of Aquitaine, even though the logical appointment would have been William the Pious.
It is argued that this was done by Robertin out of fear (his position on the throne was debateable) rather than friendship
and that, ultimately, Rainulf II died at the Court of Eudes as a result of poisoning (see NEHGR 109:181-182).
